1.5-Mile Training Plan: Completion and Improvement

This 1.5-mile training plan gives you two eight-week examples: a run-walk pathway for completing the distance and an improvement pathway for established runners. Both show the actual sessions and recovery days. If you’re preparing for a fitness test, check its current rules separately, then use the calculator to turn your chosen finish time into exact checkpoints.

Which 1.5-mile training plan fits your starting point?

If you’re working toward completing the distance, the run-walk pathway gives you manageable timed sessions and room to repeat a stage. Improvement starts from regular running and a recent performance, so the workout references have a real result behind them.

For a scored fitness test, you’ll also need the testing authority’s current instructions about how the assessment is conducted.

Choose a 1.5-mile preparation pathway
PathwayEntry pointWhat the example does
CompletionComfortable walking for about 30 minutes and able to attempt short gentle jogs8 weeks of timed run-walk practice, 3 non-consecutive days per week
ImprovementEstablished running, at least 18 km per week, a recent 5 km long run and a recent race result8 weeks, with controlled short repetitions and easy running
1.5 miles is 2,414.016 m: six 400 m laps + 14.016 m.
1.5 miles is 2,414.016 m: six 400 m laps + 14.016 m. Open full-size infographic ↗

The improvement example starts at 12 miles per week with a recent four-mile long run, and those numbers describe the example you see below.

Your own starting volume and frequency belong in the builder. For instance, if you currently run three days each week, choosing a four-day example doesn’t establish that the extra day fits your routine.

A Navy, police or employer fitness test can have its own rules for the course, surface, timing and scoring, so your assessment instructions need a separate check. This independent guide explains training examples and pacing arithmetic.

It uses the full 2,414.016-meter distance for 1.5 miles, with the difference from 2.4 km included in the checkpoint calculations.

An eight-week beginner 1.5-mile running schedule

The completion example has three non-consecutive run-walk sessions per week, and you can read each one in the weekly tables below. The running and walking blocks change as the example progresses.

Also, the opening and closing walks already count toward the session’s minutes, so the total shown is the time you need to allow for the whole session.

Your distance stays unknown until you measure it, even when the schedule gives you a precise amount of jogging time. For instance, if you cover 1.5 miles in 20 minutes, a 15-minute continuous jog will finish before you’ve reached that full distance.

The timed practice helps you build a routine, while the final measured assessment records how much ground you actually cover.

Sun1.5 Miles event or assessment2.414 kmThis is the event distance, not a forecast. Enter only if your preparation and recovery support it. Warm-up and cool-down are not assigned a distance here; record them separately if completed. The event may fall outside your ordinary training weekdays.
Completion at a manageable effort, with walking if needed.

The NHS describes beginner run-walk practice with recovery days and room to take longer. That supports the general approach used here. Our eight-week example has its own sessions, and the date you can manage a particular test will depend on your starting ability and progress.

If you already finish 1.5 miles comfortably, these opening sessions may be easier than your normal running, so the improvement requirements are worth comparing with your current routine. If the first short jogs are difficult, you can repeat the opening stage. The useful starting point is what you can manage now.

An eight-week 1.5-mile improvement schedule

The improvement example uses a twelve-mile running week, a recent four-mile long run and a 25:00 5K as its example performance for modeled training paces.

Your own recent result should supply that pace reference in the builder. Most sessions are easy running, with controlled short repetitions added on selected weeks and their recoveries shown in the session details.

The descriptions list the warm-up, work bouts, recoveries and cool-down together, which lets you check the total session as well as the faster running. Stationary recovery adds time while leaving running distance unchanged.

For example, three 90-second rests add four minutes 30 seconds to your elapsed time, with no assumed jogging mileage to add to your record.

Sun1.5 Miles event or assessment2.414 kmThis is the event distance, not a forecast. Enter only if your preparation and recovery support it. Warm-up and cool-down are not assigned a distance here; record them separately if completed. The event may fall outside your ordinary training weekdays.
Use demonstrated fitness and conditions to choose your effort.

Your recent fitness supplies the pace reference, while a desired test result gives you a target to review as you progress.

For instance, wanting a 10:00 finish and demonstrating a recent performance are different inputs in the builder. The Training Pace Calculator lets you inspect the current-fitness estimates and understand what those numbers represent before using them in a workout.

The schedule leaves a calendar day between its quality session and preferred long run, and training reduces before the final assessment. These are original editorial scheduling choices. You can inspect them and decide whether the template fits your routine, while keeping official test preparation requirements and individual coaching advice separate.

What pace do you need for a 1.5-mile test?

Your average mile pace is the chosen finish time divided by 1.5, while measured track checkpoints use the full 2,414.016 meters in their calculation.

Rear view of a runner entering the curve of an outdoor athletics track.
Use measured distance and consistent timing when you review your running.

For a 400-meter checkpoint, multiply the finish time by 400 and divide by 2,414.016. Six complete laps take you to 2,400 meters, leaving another 14.016 meters before the mile-and-a-half finish.

Even-pace 1.5-mile goal references, not pass standards

13:30.09:00.02:14.213:25.3
15:00.010:00.02:29.114:54.8

At a 12:00 goal, for example, the first 400 meters takes about 1:59.3, and six laps reach 2,400 meters in about 11:55.8. You then have the last 14.016 meters to cover. If your assessment is on a road course, its measured markers and the organizer’s instructions are the relevant guide to the finish.

Use the 1.5-Mile Run Calculator for your exact checkpoints and pace chart. That page handles the calculation; this guide explains the training examples. Neither decides your official fitness-test score.

What if your test is too soon or you miss training?

The builder keeps the full preparation period when it checks your event date, so a deadline that is too close produces an explanation rather than a compressed schedule. It also rejects a start date in the past.

If the supported template cannot fit, your present ability and the assessment’s actual requirements are what you have available to review.

If you miss a run, you can leave it out or repeat a manageable week, keeping space for recovery around the sessions you do complete. A longer break, illness or pain may change the workload you can manage when you return. This schedule organizes training inputs; it cannot assess symptoms or clear you to exercise.

Jack Daniels explains that training amount, speed and recovery are separate variables, which is useful when you look at what a changed session would involve. The exact progression here is our own template choice. A fixed weekly percentage or an intended score increase needs to be understood within that limitation.

The 1.5-mile option in the Running Training Plan Builder lets you use your actual dates and running base, then review the assumptions before saving locally.

Its done boxes track progress through the plan. You can add a completed activity separately when you have a measured distance and time to include in your running history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as an official fitness-test programme?

These are independent educational examples, with official eligibility, course, timing and pass requirements set by your testing authority. You should confirm its current instructions directly before preparing for a scored assessment. A target time on this page is a pacing example rather than certification of a passing score.

Can a 2.4 km result be used as an exact 1.5-mile result?

Exactly 1.5 miles is 2,414.016 meters, so a 2.4 km result covers 14.016 meters less than the full distance used here. You can calculate a constant-pace equivalent to understand that difference.

Your original result still needs its measured distance attached when you save it or compare it with a test requirement.

What if I don’t have a recent race time?

You can use the completion pathway’s effort-based run-walk sessions without a race result. For improvement, the builder asks for a recent demonstrated result before calculating its pace references, rather than assigning you the example’s 25-minute 5K. This keeps your training inputs connected to something you’ve actually done.

Do the done boxes log my test result?

No. They mark progress through a saved plan. To record what you actually ran, add a completed activity with its measured distance and time. That keeps an intended test, an estimated pace and a completed run from being counted as the same thing.
